about

ऋ [ɾi] —This letter means "sound" (Agni Purāṇa, Chapter 348). The sound of this character can be represented by no English letter, and must be acquired by the ear.

Straying from the usual electronic music nomenclature of remixes, re-fixes and re-edits, this EP is simply titled ‘[ɾi]’ as each of the two tracks is the result of a recycling of concepts and sound material traded between the two artists over the years.

The EP opens with ‘Ṛiṣabha’ (ऋषभ), better known as Ri - the second svara/note in the Indian classical musical scale. This track was originally written by Barasingha as an instrumental exploration of breakbeat choppage around a looping piano motif in D harmonic/natural minor. The vocal performance by Shivacult in Raga Shanmukhapriya was incorporated later as an experiment. Theoretically, the western scale used and the raga are incompatible with each other but somehow work together in this particular case to create a soulful melancholic ambience.

On the B-side is ‘Kṛttikā’ (कृत्तिका), a rebuild of a concept track based on a classical composition set in Raga Natabhairavi, teased by Shivacult in 2015. Barasingha lends a more forward driving drumfunk feel to the spacious laid-back groove of the original concept while encasing it in a tight Drum & Bass style arrangement.

Lastly, to tie it all together thematically is the use of common instrumentation across the two tracks - Shivacult with his signature dulcimer melodies and Barasingha with his reese bass excursions.

This latest effort from Barasingha and Shivacult represents a culmination in a series of collaborations between the two artists, trying to find common ground while working towards creating a unique aesthetic. With the groundwork laid, they look to collaborate on bigger and more ambitious projects going forward.
